Seattle's last trip to Denver came down to one final throw

Twenty five years ago this week, on Oct. 14, 2001, Seattle beat Denver 34-21 at Husky Stadium. Mike Holmgren's team dominated Mike Shanahan's from the start. Shaun Alexander ran 33 times for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns, the first a 60-yard score that opened the scoring. Reggie Tongue intercepted Brian Griese twice, including a 55-yard pick six on the first play of the second quarter that made it 17-0. Alex Bannister blocked a punt and returned it 9 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to push the lead to 31-14. Griese finished with 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Trent Dilfer was 12 of 18 for 110 yards and didn't need to do much more. Shawn Springs had the second interception, and Rian Lindell kicked two field goals. Denver's last score was a meaningless 86-yard punt return for a touchdown by Deltha O'Neal late in the fourth quarter, with the outcome long decided.

Seattle hasn't actually played in Denver since Sept. 9, 2018, and that one went down to the wire. The Seahawks led 24-20 with under 15 minutes left after Tyler Lockett's 51-yard touchdown catch, but Case Keenum answered with a 4-yard touchdown to Demaryius Thomas with 11:18 to go, a call upheld on replay review, and Denver won 27-24. Seattle's last play, with 2 seconds left, was intercepted. Russell Wilson threw 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions and was sacked 6 times, 3 by Von Miller, who also forced and recovered a Chris Carson fumble. Will Dissly, a rookie that day, caught 3 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown in his first regular season game. Four players from that game are still with the same team.
